The rules in Wales

In Wales, since 7 January 2019, a new development of more than one dwelling, or with a construction area of 100 m² or more, needs its surface water drainage approved by the council’s SuDS Approving Body (SAB) before work starts. SAB approval is separate from planning permission, though the two applications can be made together.

Drainage strategy (SuDS) in Wales

This page lists drainage engineers covering all 22 Welsh local authority areas, with cities such as Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham. Each of the 22 councils is the planning authority for its area, and Wales sets its own planning policy, so check the rules for Wales rather than England.

We list 15 firms for drainage strategy (SuDS) in Wales. Of these, 3 work only in this region and 12 also cover other regions. Another 34 firms say they cover the whole UK.

Firms that work only here are based in Abergavenny (1), Taff's Well (1) and Wrexham (1).

Of the 15, 6 state an accreditation or membership, most often ISO 14001 (2). We have not verified any of them yet, so these are as each firm states. See how we check listings.

Nearby regions for drainage strategy (SuDS): South West, West Midlands and North West. Other reports in Wales: flood risk assessment, topographical survey, structural engineer’s report, contaminated land report and percolation and soakaway tests.

Getting signed off in Wales

Building control in Wales works much like England. Your council or a registered building control approver checks the work and issues a completion or final certificate. Wales has its own Approved Documents, and all new and converted homes must have sprinklers.
